Remote controls and cable releases are offered by different companies. Many camera manufacturers now also make remotes for their products. These are the most trusted sources as the use of approved products will not void the warranty on a device. As for camera releases they are basically a long wire that pulls the shutter release to take a picture from a long distance, basically a low-tech remote control. This remote is very simple and only features one button but will still be useful to the professional photographer and amateur alike. The user will still have to set the zoom for their camera manually rather than from afar. This is actually more desirable since a good view of the picture will not be capable except through a close view of the view finder.

A video camera remote control acts as a method to control the camera from a distance, much like with a photo remote. A good remote will have the option to zoom in and out, record, and even rewind or fast forward. This is convenient for the user who cannot work the buttons on their camera because they are too small. Some video cameras will come bundled with a remote control, others will have it as an after market option. When buying a third party remote always be sure to check for compatibility. Not all electronic devices are compatible together. The remote manufacturer should have a compatibility list.
