Digital Camera Filters

Digital camera filters work very much like their film counterparts. If used properly they filter certain light spectra out of the light in almost any way desired. They apply effects on the picture that cannot be easily duplicated after the development of the picture is done.

Some people call optical filters also a pre processing of pictures. Filters sometimes make it possible to take pictures that are otherwise not being able to be taken.

A polarizing filter for digital cameras for example can reduce the contrast in a picture and since digital cameras are more prone to highlights in pictures this is great help.

Also easier to use than with regular film cameras are Infrared filters which will extend the photographers physical eye into the usually invisible light spectrum.

Commonly filters are used most often to improve the pictures quality to a real life seen scene by the human eye. Some of the Filters availableare polarizing filters, close up filters, UV cut filters and neutral density filters.

Some filters for digital cameras are just added to change the visible color of the picture somewhat to create a certain mood such as warmer, redder, greener, cooler and much more. With digital images this can often also be done after the picture is taken by software filters.

Some cameras require protective filters to protect more expensive hard to replace camera optics from damaging light rays.

The just before mentioned software filters can create almost any effect imaginable. From crayon, impressionist to blur and zoom or even solarized effects software filters can provide it. Yes, they also can change the mood of a certain picture, though it will look similar, it cannot yet replace a optical filter in a camera. Software filters even can create pictures that look like fabric, a cartoon by tracing the outlines, mosaics or stained glass. A software filter can create way more optical effects in a picture than a regular filter but they are not able to recreate the pictures a opticalfilter can take.

Filters also come in a variety of width, since not every camera mount has the same size as any other camera mount. There are 52mm digital camera filters as well as 58mm digital camera filters. Sometimes there are also adapter rings to adapt to any size necessary. Some cameras even only accept 55mm filters.

Hoyer, Robin Kanta and Bower digital filters are the dominant filter producers on the photography market and are available for sale in many stores.
