Surge Protectors
If you own a PC you might have one of those, a surge protector. But what actually is a surge protector and what does it do. A surge protector looks much like a lot of common outlet strips sold on the market but its task is more complicated than just delivering power to an appliance. A surge protector protects any electrical devices connected to it from high voltage surges and therefore from destruction. The surge protector tries to regulate through electrical circuits the voltage supplied to your appliance and blocks or shorts voltage to ground above a certain damaging level. A power surge in electrical terms also called transient voltage that rises very quickly above a safe level can damage electrical devised to the point where they will not work any more or might even create a fire. So lets imagine you just bought a new PC, it was not the most expensive one, but you saved up a nice amount of money. Along the power lines comes an electric power surge and destroys your PC, that is not a very nice though, is it? Surges can for example be created by bad regulation of the power in the electrical power lines or by lightning striking power lines and adding very fast a lot of energy to the lines. Having a cheap piece of equipment such as surge protectors can safe your PC from destruction or serious damage.
Different surge protectors on the market use different technologies to achieve a similar protection from these high voltage spikes.
Some power surge protectors use fuses or circuit breakers to stop excessive power from entering your equipment, others use small transformers or other electrical parts.
The choice of surge protector also depends on how many appliances and other electricity using products need to be connected to the power strip.
Manufacturers will show on their product how much energy can be pulled from their surge protector and this determines how many appliances you can connect to the protector.
To find the one you need for your home or business it is helpful to read surge protector reviews and also to have a look at surge protector ratings. Should you still be confused, your local electronics store employee should also be able to give you advice and help you figuring out what exactly you need. Sometimes some PC manufacturer will also include a surge protector in their equipment bundle when you buy it at a Computer store or the store employee tries to convince you that it is an essential piece of equipment you should add to you order. Now you know he is right.
